BENEFITS OF PLASTERING

COMMON TYPE OF PLASTER

Browning Plaster

Browning plaster serves as an excellent base layer, providing a smooth, uniform undercoat. It's particularly effective when applied to brickwork and other porous surfaces. For optimal results, aim for a thickness of around 11mm on walls and 8mm on ceilings. While the plaster typically sets within a few hours, it's best to wait 24-48 hours before applying a skim coat. This waiting period ensures the browning plaster is sufficiently dry and stable.

Bonding Plaster

Bonding plaster, the more adaptable sibling of browning plaster, is a versatile undercoat plaster. Its key advantage is its ability to adhere to almost any surface, regardless of absorption rates, making it a popular choice among builders and DIY enthusiasts. Like browning plaster, it shares similar drying time and thickness requirements. Notably, if your wall or ceiling already has a relatively smooth surface, bonding plaster can double as a finishing coat, offering additional flexibility in its application.

Hardwall Plaster

Next in our lineup of undercoat plasters is hardwall plaster. Known for its durability, ease of application, and rapid drying time of just 1-2 hours, it's a favored choice, particularly in high-traffic areas. Hardwall plaster pairs exceptionally well with masonry surfaces, including brick, cement blocks, stone, and marble. However, it's important to note that if the underlying wall lacks stability, the plaster may develop cracks.

Tough Coat Plaster

Tough coat plaster stands out as the most resilient among undercoat plasters. Its exceptional durability is characterized by high impact resistance, weather protection, and fire retardation, making it significantly more robust than alternative plaster types. This makes it an ideal choice for masonry walls. However, tough coat plaster has one notable weakness: prolonged moisture exposure. Over time, persistent dampness can compromise its strength, potentially leading to adhesion issues and the development of visible damp patches.

One Coat Plaster

Unlike most plasters that serve as either an undercoat or a finish, one-coat plaster, true to its name, fulfills both roles. This gypsum-based product creates a single thick layer (approximately 25mm) that's sufficient on its own. Its scratch-resistant nature eliminates the need for a protective skim coat. One-coat plaster's versatility extends to its application method, allowing for both manual and mechanical application. This flexibility makes it a preferred choice in the industry, especially for small-area repairs.

Dri-Coat Plaster

Here's a rewritten version of the text: We've included dri-coat plaster as an honorable mention on our list. It provides a useful solution for damp-related issues by blocking hygroscopic salts, which cause moisture retention in walls. However, it's important to note that dri-coat plaster has limitations. It doesn't perform well in extreme temperatures, particularly freezing conditions. Additionally, if strong fire safety is a priority for your building, you'll need to consider supplementary fire protection measures.
